Many wonder how to tell a good honest breeder from a scam artist, in my opinion the scam artists rarely show their dogs, it's expensive and cuts into their profit margin, however they boast champ lines, even though the champs are so far back on the pedigree they're not even worth mentioning. It does sound impressive to the uneducated buyer, which is who they prey upon. There is good and bad in all aspects of dog showing/breeding and it's the educated buyer that gets the best dog for the money.... Buy your new puppy from someone that cares to improve the breed and not ride off of another breeder's accomplishments from many generations ago...if you support honest breeding! You'll find you end up with a full grown dog that actually looks like a Chihuahua because the breeder shows their dogs, they are very aware of what a purebred Chihuahua looks and acts like and strives for perfection.
If you choose a back yard breeder (one who never shows and breeds for grocery money and always has excuses why they don't care to put the time and money into their dogs through health testing or showing) you may end up with what appears to be a cute little Chihuahua puppy at 8 weeks old but once it hits a year old and is 15+ pounds, nasty and riddled with one of the many health issues that are common in the breed, you'll have no legal recourse.
Please get a written guarantee that covers health and genetics. Many breeders say they guarantee, but they also know you won't return the dog at say 2 years old for a genetic problem, so the guarantee becomes moot... (a pet store trick the back yard breeders have learned to use). My best advice is always buy from a honest show breeder, one you develope a relationship and feel comfortable with. Breeders that show actually breed for improvement and purity, we spend the extra money to health test the parents and puppies, we show our dogs with pride to many different judges that have said "The Dog Is Breed Worthy". Again in my opinion only the American Kennel Club has such dog shows, all other registries are just tools to help the lazy breeders sell the dog by tricking the buyer into thinking it's a purebred, these registry's require little proof of pureness before issuing papers.
Something many puppy buyers don't realize is "the purpose of showing is to evaluate breeding stock to see if it's worthy of breeding" with that said, think about WHO is deciding who should be bred together and produce puppies for sale among the non-showing /health testing Back Yard Breeder? ... I can answer that -- 'Just Them'. Don't believe them? I surely don't... If you breed, you should show/health test the parent dogs before breeding/raise the puppies in a clean environment / keep the number of dogs low so they get the best care and are properly socialized / guarantee in righting all of their puppies genetics/place all pet quality puppies on a spay/neuter basis ...... No excuses accepted, even though many have come up with some very inventive and imaginative reasons why they don't show/health test or go the extra mile for the breed they claim to love! ... Don't BUY their lies, every single one of them is a lie!
Breeding purebred dogs is about the love and respect of the dog and keeping of a breed, NOT MONEY or profit. ........ The more I put into a breeding a litter, the better the health/looks/and soundness of mind and body the puppies end up with. The same as with many other aspects of life, you get out what you put in. That said, not all show breeders can be trusted, any breeder that shows or not, that offer's to meet you at a rest stop or a dog show (to save you the long ride in these high gas prices) BUYER BEWARE ! It's against the AKC rules of ethics to sell a dog at a show or on the show grounds, a breeder doing that is hiding something, usually the home is filthy and the parents are not what they should be as far as temperament/size or pureness. Go to the home and see where the puppies are raised, don't take anyone's word for what you should see with your own eyes, THEN trust your instincts ! .....Good luck, be educated and careful in your search.
